Professor Elvio Covino becomes Cuir’s new President

Prof. Elvio Covino

The beginning of the new year comes with a great news regarding the management of Cuir, which has now a new President, professor Elvio Covino, lecturer and senior researcher at’“Campus Bio-Medico” University of Rome . This is the actual point of a bright academic (and professional) career, which makes us very happy to have such an outstanding scholar as the leader of our institution.
Professor Covino, who is a heart surgeon, specialized in several research fields related to cardiovascular surgery. His work deals with a huge range of topic, encompassing from heart transplant to complex congenital heart diseases.
After graduating in Medicine in 1975 at “Federico II” University of Naples, with two specializations, one in General Surgery and the other in Heart Surgery, he started his career in the academic field. Since the very beginning of his activity, professor Covino had the opportunity of cooperating with leading international tea,s, particularly, between 1983 and 1985, as a research Fellow at the First Surgery Department at Osaka University Medical School, leaded by professor Yasunaru Kawashima.
The experience has been followed by a relevant work (both theoretical and experimental) concerning heart transplant, which took place at Columbia University, in the Cardiac Transplant Service, leaded by Dr. Eric Rose, M.D.
Apart from his substantial and remarkable research activity, which has been funded, throughout the years, even by the Italian National Research Centre, in 1995 professor Covino passed the competitive exam to become full professor (for the first time) of Heart Surgery, and he started his new career. He gave lectures in “Magna Grecia” University in Catanzaro, then, since 2001, at“Campus Bio-Medico” University of Rome, where his activity as a professor has combined with a very successful experience in coordinating the didactic work of the Department of Medicine at the same university. He first became (until now) Director of the Postgraduate School in heart Surgery, then, between 2009 and 2011, President of the Coordination Commission of Postgraduate Schools of the whole university, after acting, between 2004 and 2009, as Head of the Department of Medicine at the same university.
Thus, the deep expertise and the brilliant career of professor Covino bring considerable eminence (and new perspectives for future growth of Cuir’s activities) atCuir, which, since its foundation, distinguished itself for a successful attitude to identify and nurture young talents and foster new paths for educational growth and development.
Furthermore, the international experience of the new Cuir President is especially helpful for the implementation ofCuir’s international activities, srun both autonomously and through EucA (“European University College Association”), network of merit-based University Colleges which gathers institutions coming from more than 10 European countries, and organizing training and research activities for university students, mainly focused on soft-skills formation and training.
Thus, we are fully convinced that professor Covino will be very helpful on this path and we are very willing to wish him all the best for the new adventure he has just started with us!
